The small town of Nyahururu lies at high altitude (2360 m) with a splendid climate and is Kenya's highest town, surrounded by pretty tracts of forest and agricultural land, and the region benefits from high rainfall. The surrounding plateau is highly cultivated with maize, beans and sweet potatoes, which are well represented in Nyahururu's lively market. It originally served the colonial settler farmers in the area and was boosted when a branch line of the railway reached the town in 1929. This still runs, but only carries freight. In the post-war period the town was prosperous enough to boast a racecourse. Lately, flower farming has brought new life to Nyahururu. Although only a few kilometres north of the equator, nights can be cold, with occasional frosts in the early months of the year. Samuel Wanjiru, the long-distance runner and now Olympic marathon record holder and the first Kenyan to win the marathon at the Olympics in Beijing in 2008, calls Nyahururu home. Like Nanyuki, Nyahururu is almost on the equator, and it shares much of Nanyuki’s character. It’s high up (at 2360m, Kenya’s highest town), cool and set on open savanna lands with patches of indigenous forest and plenty of coniferous plantations. Since the B5 road to Nyeri was completed, Nyahururu has been less cut off, but it’s still something of a frontier town for routes north to Lake Turkana and the desert. A tarmac road goes out as far as Rumuruti and then the fun begins. Thomson's Falls is a 74 m (243 ft) scenic waterfall on the Ewaso Ng'iro river, which drains from the Aberdare Mountain Range. It is situated two miles from the town of Nyahururu in central Kenya, at 2,360 m (7,750 ft) elevation. In 1883 Joseph Thomson’s Falls or Nyahururu Fallsv is a stunning waterfall that is located close to the equator near Nyahururu in Kenya.Thomson was the first European to reach Thomson Falls, and named them for his father. He was a Scottish geologist and naturalist who was also the first European to walk from Mombasa to Lake Victoria in the early 1880s; The mist feeds the dense forest below. Visitors can view the falls from above, or there's a trail down to the bottom of the ravine. Upstream from the falls is one of the highest hippo pools in Kenya. Ewaso Narok River is a tributary of the Ewaso Ng'iro River. The falls span a height of 72 meters. It is a major economic resource for the adjacent town of Nyahururu. Most of the revenue is received from tourists, both international and domestic, who are charged at the gate. The site is eye-catching and everyone who wants to unwind after a busy week in the city can find it comfortable, The Falls appeared in the TV Movie the Man in the Brown suit. Many still call it “T. Falls”, and not just the old settlers as you might expect. Thomson’s falls was one of the last settler towns to be established. The first sign of urbanization was a hut built by the Narok Angling Club in the early 1920s to allow its members to fish for the newly introduced trout in the Ewaso Narok, Pesi and Equator rivers. In 1929, when the railway branch line arrived, the Nyahururu town began to take shape. The line has closed now, but the hotel built in 1931, Thomson’s Falls Lodge, is still going strong, and Nyahururu remains an important market town, and not really a tourist centre. The market is well worth a browse, especially on Saturdays. It sprawls out over most of the district west of the stadium, an indication of the town’s rapid growth over the last couple of decades.

From the branding on the outer wall to the finer details of the interior and décor in each room it’s easy to see that no expense has been spared by the hotel management to give clients a taste of luxurious hospitality. As you make the turn towards the legendary Thompson’s Falls on the Nyeri-Nyahururu road, it’s hard to miss the elegant structures that make up the Panari Resort. Even from a distance, the brown walls and the well-manicured lawns blend with the natural forest to give the place a cool peaceful feel. Panari Resort Nyahururu sits on a 20-acre piece of land next to the falls, from the highest point, the presidential villa; it is actually possible to see the falls. As you enter the resort, you will notice that the architect and landscaper have tried to work around some of the oldest trees in the compound, while allowing for natural lighting in the 22 stand-alone cottages. The hilly topography has also been maintained as the cottages are built in such a way that they blend with the gentle slope of the land. The reception is placed strategically such that it overlooks a man-made water feature. The feature makes for a spectacular sight at night as the light illuminate the “mini waterfall”. Once you check in, the porter takes you and your luggage to the room on a buggy that is slightly bigger than your average golf cart. The five-star resort has invested in 10 of these buggies, dedicating six for guests and four for the maintenance crew so you need not to worry about walking from one end of the 20-acre piece of land to another. Unlike its sister, the Panari Hotel in Nairobi, this resort consists of 22 stand-alone cottages, each with four rooms, an executive villa and a presidential villa. Each of the rooms has a fireplace that comes in handy on chilly nights. The shower heads are designed to look like sprinklers saving on water but ensuring that bathing literally feels like dancing in the rain. You can also make coffee in your room as well as enjoy the fast Wi-Fi. The location of the resort makes it suitable for both the business traveller and the adventurous tourist looking for an overnight break when doing the treacherous 7-hour road journey to and from Samburu.
