Mombasa is an island on the country’s Eastern coastline that borders the azure Indian Ocean and is home to idyllic palm fringed beaches with soft brilliant white sands. With relatively warm weather all year round, it is the ideal destination for the holiday maker looking for a memorable getaway. Mombasa is a picturesque culmination of intriguing history and tradition combined with modernity. The city’s rich cultures that are still remnant today are as a result of the Portuguese, Arab, African, Persian and British influences over the decades. Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese in the late sixteenth century in order to guard the Old Port of Mombasa is today one of the area’s most popular tourist attractions. Mombasa’s history relics are apparent today especially in exotic Old Town Mombasa with its narrow winding streets, intricately carved Swahili doors and women clad in traditional ‘bui-bui’. Many of the hotels that dot the coast of Mombasa have been constructed to resemble Swahili villages or have buildings that are infused with Arab inspiration. However, Mombasa isn’t just an island that is steeped in its own culture and history. Modern Western influences are evident in the city where nightclubs are pulsating with music that is both local and cosmopolitan, and eateries that offer cuisines ranging from Italian and Chinese to Indian and traditional Swahili gastronomy. The majority of the natives speak English and the local Swahili language, making travel to this area less daunting for tourists. The North Coast of Mombasa is a hub of activity, with numerous large commercial beach hotels and resorts offering water sports and beach activities, as well as nightclubs and casinos. There are animal sanctuaries and nature trails, plenty of shopping opportunities for locally made handicrafts and fabrics and much to sightsee in this area. The South Coast Mombasa also has a few large hotels along Diani beach, but offers more secluded private beaches such as Tiwi beach that has quieter accommodation away from the crowds and is ideal for a couple’s retreat. The South Coast is also known for its diving and snorkelling and, in particular, the dolphin dhow safari excursion to Wasini Island. Whether visitors to Mombasa are young or old, couples or groups, families with children or business travellers, there are options for both activity-filled scenes as well as quiet, secluded beaches to suit their preferences and it isn’t difficult to see why this island pulls in the number of tourists it does each year. This is an undeniable fact! The coastal region is the leading tourist destination in the Kenya and one of the top world tourist destinations. This region has an alluring effect on both the domestic and the international tourists. Visitors, both local and foreign, keep streaming to the Kenyan coast to sample its spectacular tourist attractions. Some end up making the Kenyan coast their second home, while others look forward to their next getaway, vacation and holiday to return to the Kenyan coast. We have a common saying here that says (in English): "Coming to Mombasa is easy but leaving is difficult." You know why it is so? Don’t worry, even if you have no idea, you will soon find out. Just relax, go get yourself a glass of cold fresh juice or a hot cup of tea or coffee...and grab some cookies too, and then come back. You are about to find out why Mombasa is Mombasa Raha, for many, Mombasa is just the hub to the beach resorts. And though the beaches are everything you expect – soft white sand, ever shining sun and palm trees – that view is selling the region short. If you’re flying in from outside Kenya, you’ll usually have to fly to Nairobi and change planes for Mombasa there. However, there are also (typically from Europe) some charter companies who fly directly to Mombasa as part of a holiday package. They are often cheaper, so it pays to look for them. Please note there are no direct flights from North America or Australia to Kenya. Here are all the details about available flights to Mombasa. The Kenyan travel sector is well developed, meaning more possibilities for discount flights - here are my tips to get cheap flights to Mombasa. If you’re flying in from a neighbouring country, you have several Kenya airports (or rather air strips) to choose from as your landing point. The easiest ways to get around are by taxi and matatu. Mombasa taxis are plenty available. Short rides should cost you around Ksh 300 and longer ones around Ksh 1000. Taxi drivers will also be happy to be your private driver for a day. If you don’t make hundreds of miles – gas is expensive – it should cost some 3000 to 4000 Ksh per day. But taxis aren’t always in a decent state and the traffic can be pretty mad. Matatus are private minibuses that run on fixed lines. They are easily recognized by the fierce graffiti (and loud benga or rap music)… For just 30 Ksh you can go with one as far as you like. At any point, you can get in by raising your hand and get out by tapping the driver’s shoulder. This is transport the African way: cheap and efficient. However, stick to taxis after dark, since there have been cases of matatu robberies at night. In some cases car hire in Mombasa may also be the right choice, but make sure you read all the small print. The sun in Kenya is always shining and temperature differences from month to month are small. However, you have to reckon with the two rainy seasons each year: April to June and October-November. The tourist seasons are December-January and July-August, which coincides with the dry seasons. During rainy seasons, some national parks are badly accessible or even closed. On the other hand, prices of accommodation etc. are lower during the rainy seasons and if you want to avoid crowds, this is the time to go. Regarding temperature: December to April are the hottest months with an average maximum of 31C during the day, while the coolest months of July-August are only a few degrees lower. The coast area is hotter than Nairobi and more humid, making the weather feel like a hot wet blanket sometimes. Here’s more about weather at the Kenyan coast. No matter where you are in Kenya's second-largest city, Mombasa, you can reach Bamburi Beach by matatu, a public minibus. Just listen for the driver's call of "Bamburi Bamburi Bamburi ... " and hop on. The white sand beach fronted by Mombasa Marine Park is home to several large hotels and resorts, making it a bustling tourist hub with plenty of things to do. Peake Luna Watersports, based at Travellers Beach Hotel on Bamburi Beach, offers a comprehensive range of water sports excursions and equipment rentals. Personal watercrafts, paddle boats, mini sail boats, canoes and kayaks are available by the hour to enjoy in the warm, calm Indian Ocean waters off Bamburi. Among excursions offered by the company is four- to eight-hour deep sea fishing trips, which present the opportunity to catch tuna, marlin and sailfish; guided snorkeling trips to Mombasa Marine Park in a glass-bottomed boat; and the Sunset Creek Safari, a full day exploring an inland creek fringed with mangroves. Buccaneer Diving a PADI five-star dive company operating throughout East Africa, has its original center at Whitesands Hotel on Bamburi Beach. Here, visitors can arrange certification courses and a variety of dive trips on custom boats. The marine life seen at dive sites frequented by Buccaneer Diving includes sea turtles, reef sharks, and in winter, giant, gentle whale sharks. Haller Park (lafarge.co.ke), within minutes of Bamburi Beach, is one of Mombasa's major tourist attractions. The nature reserve and animal sanctuary was established in 1959 by reclaiming and rehabilitating former cement quarry land along the coast. Some notable animals you can see while walking around the nature trails at Haller Park are hippos, giraffes, oryx, vervet monkeys and giant tortoises, as well as many bird species including a giant eagle owl. The property also includes a crocodile farm and a reptile park housing 16 species of snakes. Tourists visiting Bamburi Beach will likely be approached by numerous local vendors offering all manner of wares and informal guide services. Among them are generally local fishermen offering to take you out on a dhow, a traditional wooden sailing vessel. Camel rides on the sand are also sometimes available. Bartering is expected, so don't settle for the inflated price the vendor initially offers you. Improvised markets where you can negotiate for sarongs, carvings, art and other souvenirs also spring up on the beach. The numerous hotels along Bamburi Beach entice tourists with entertainment in their restaurants and bars. Jacaranda Bar at Kenya Beach Hotel, for example, presents Masai dance performances, acrobats and live music in the evenings. Bamburi Beach Resort's Dhow Deck Bar offers sports on the big screen, and at night its Club Coco is a vibrant hot spot. Other night clubs in the vicinity include Pirates Beach Club, Mamba Disco and Black Havana.
Mamba Village Excursion
Mamba Village is situated in Nyali area of Mombasa, Kenya. East Africa's largest crocodile farm, Mamba village has never failed to impress. A tour of the farm starts with a movie on the life cycle and behavior of crocodiles. Excellent cuisine is available at the Mamba Restaurant, and the house specialty is superbly grilled crocodile meat.
