The Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa is situated north of Mombasa on one of East Africa’s most stunning beaches. Palatial grounds, Arabic architecture and wonderful facilities make it simply ‘the’ place to stay on the Kenyan coast. The Whitesands Hotel Concept’ began in 1930 when Mr. H G Robertson bought a new house with two bedrooms flanked by a long lounge. Robertson was working as an Editor of Mombasa Times, which grew into the present day ‘Standard’. He called his new abode Whitesands Hotel. Ali Bin Salim – The Liwali (Chief) then gave him a few more acres of land on the beach. In 1941 - Mrs. Stocker bought the ‘Whitesands Hotel’ from Robertson’s widow. She built a larger establishment of 8 cottages and Whitesands Hotel was officially open for business. The first guests were from the Royal Navy - a brigade of enlisted lady Sailors known as WRENS, who were sent to assist in shore duties. A phrase was coined at this time to describe the popular Whitesands Hotel as ‘Whitesands Hotel Waving Palms, Silver strands, Luck, Love, Romance and Revelry’. In 1946 Mrs. Stocker sold Whitesands Hotel to David Durwood Brown. He is credited with making Whitesands Hotel popular with the locals and it became known as the "Pub by the sea". Some years later in 1960 Akberali Manzi bought Whitesands Hotel from David Durwood Brown. Seventy new rooms were built, the central complex was reconstructed and a boat bar was introduced – later a bathing pool called ‘LIDO’ was added. Renovation went on and by 1976; the ‘Pub by the Sea’ had been turned into a five star hotel. In 1976 The Sarova Group of Companies bought the Whitesands Hotel and set into motion ambitious development plans which changed the hotel from 70 rooms in 1976 to 173 and then to 340 by 1996. Currently, Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa has 335 rooms in the various room offerings; the Standard, Sea front, Palm, Premier, Acacia, and Presidential suites.

Beaches are the ultimate destination for relaxation and leisure. The white sand beaches with crystal clear water are not just for a dip in it, but for some beach volleyball, water sports and wonderful glimpses of Nature. Mombasa is a city located at the Kenyan coast about 432 km south east of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Coral reefs, mangrove forests, beaches, lowlands, and kaya forests characterize the area. The main economic activities include tourism, fishing and trade along the coastal areas. Mombasa is a historical trading town that today attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists annually. It is well-known for its beautiful beaches of which Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach is one. It is also the only remaining stretch of beach in Mombasa that is not under private management which means it is especially important to the local community. The rest of the Mombasa shoreline contains may private hotels that block access to the sea. Mombasa is blessed with numerous beaches – whether you’re a sun seeker, surfer or nature buff, there is a place for you. Along Mombasa coast is a chain of ocean side beach towns, great places to stay when you want to enjoy a beach holiday, the Indian Ocean coast has everything you’d expect – white sands, crystal clear waters and lovely warm weather. Mombasa is the most famous beach in Kenya and the main tourist sun and beach destination, the open landscape, vegetation, the warm climate, the clear waters of its sea, the fine and white sand which seem to have been filtered by the man’s hands, all this make Mombasa, an unforgettable and unique place to stay. Sultry, dusty Mombasa is the gateway to Kenya's sparkling Indian Ocean coast. Crammed onto an island that is connected to the mainland by a short causeway to the west, a bridge to the north and a ferry to the south, this distinctly tropical city is steeped in history. Its chunky fort, historic houses and cosmopolitan population bear witness to its long pedigree as a trading centre: Swahili, African, Indian, Chinese, Omani and British traders have been striking deals here since the 12th century, and dhows (traditional sailing boats) still ply the surrounding waters. Mombasa's best suburban beach, Nyali, just north of Mombasa Island, is close enough to town to get busy at weekends. Here you can lounge on pale, palm-shaded sand, hire windsurfing or snorkelling equipment, drink coconut juice fresh from the shell, take a camel ride along the shoreline or visit the Mombasa Marine National Park. Water sports centers at or near resort hotels also rent pedalos, bogie boards and catamarans. Some places even offer accredited diving courses. Mombasa's Old Town, a maze of alleyways dotted with historic Swahili houses and mosques, is engrossing to explore on foot. Presiding over the harbour entrance is the late 16th-century Fort Jesus, a chunky coastal defence built by the occupying Portuguese to keep the coastal Swahilis at bay; it has battlements to climb, and a small ethnographic museum to nose around. Central Mombasa's signature landmarks are the gigantic aluminium elephant tusk arches on Moi Avenue: they commemorate a visit by Britain's Princess Margaret in 1956. Central Mombasa is not an obvious family destination, but kids may enjoy a visit to Fort Jesus; they'll also love splashing around in the pools of the suburban beach hotels, snorkelling off Nyali Beach, and spotting elephants and zebras on a day trip to Shimba Hills, 33km (21 miles) southwest of town. Many visitors to Mombasa build a safari into their stay. The closest destination is Shimba Hills National Reserve, 33km (21 miles) southwest of town. This is one of East Africa's last remaining coastal rainforests, where elephants wander through the morning mist and you stand a good chance of seeing rare and magnificent sable antelopes. With more time to spare you could head inland to Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks, 140km (87 miles) northwest of Mombasa, which together form one of the largest game-viewing areas in the world. Far less crowded than Kenya's more popular parks, they are home to lions, hippos, elephants, zebras and a great many species of antelope and gazelle. On special request, you can explore Mombasa harbour in style aboard a traditional dhow. For a real treat, book a private sunset cruise. The crew will do all the work, leaving you free to relax on a pile of cushions with a dawa (the classic Swahili cocktail of vodka muddled with brown sugar, honey and lime) and enjoy the gentle lapping of the waves against the wooden hull. With a little notice, hotel travel desks will book a trip for you. Moi International Airport serves the city of Mombasa. It is located in Port Reitz area, also known locally as Chaani area on the mainland metropolitan area. Flights to Nairobi and other Kenyan, European and Middle Eastern destinations depart from the airport. Besides Mombasa and Nairobi is well connected by chartered flights operated via Wilson airport. Driving in Mombasa is straightforward and the majority of the roads are tarmacked. Main roads include Jomo Kenyatta Avenue, Digo Road, Nyerere Road, Nkurumah Road, Moi Avenue, Mama Ngina Drive, Barack Obama Road, Nairobi Highway and Nyali Road. Highways connect Mombasa to Nairobi, Dar es Salaam while northward road link to Malindi and Lamu, which also extends towards the border with Somalia. Within Mombasa, most local people use matatus (mini-buses) which are extremely common in Kenya, to move around the city and its suburbs. The tuk-tuk—a motor vehicle with three wheels—is widely used as transport around the city and its suburbs. No more than three passengers may be carried. A boda-boda is originally a bicycle taxi. Especially in cities, the bicycles are more and more replaced by motorbikes.
